Hereford College of Arts invites entries for their Brian Hatton Young Artist Competition

Hereford College of Arts invites entries for their annual Young Artist Competition for 2019. As in previous years, the competition celebrates the life and work of Herefordshire artist Brian Hatton. Open to young creatives, aged between 5 and 16 who have a passion for art, this competition offers great prizes to category winners and schools who enter.

This year, there is no set theme for the competition, the College just wants to see entrants be creative by welcoming all kinds of 2D art – from painting and drawing to illustration, collage and print. Participants are encouraged to draw upon the life and work of Brian Hatton as inspiration for their entries. Schools can find some useful study materials about Brian Hatton, including lesson plans, online.

Brian Hatton was born in Hereford, and lived in Whitecross and then later Broomy Hill. He started practicing as an artist at a very early age, going on to create over 1000 art works in his lifetime. Brian Hatton used all sorts of mediums to create his artwork, including oil paint, watercolours, pencil and pastels. His subjects included landscape views, horses, agricultural activities and country people as well as imaginative subjects inspired by literature. Brian had a studio in London, where he began a successful professional career as a portrait painter, before tragically losing his life in Egypt, whilst serving with the Worcester Yeomanry, in the First World War.

Competition organiser, Lauren Vickery, says

I really love HCA’s Young Artist Competition, it’s great to see how Brian Hatton’s artwork continues to inspire so many young creatives in Herefordshire. There are some great prizes to be won – not only for category winners, but for school participation too. At HCA, we think it’s really important to recognise the significant work schools in Herefordshire and our surrounding counties do in encouraging creativity. I can’t wait to see this year’s entries!

Entries must be sent via post, or dropped off to Young Artist Competition, Hereford College of Arts, Folly Lane, Hereford, HR1 1LT.

The deadline for entries is Friday 1 March 2019.

The competition will culminate with a joint Awards Night and Exhibition Celebration with the HCA Young Photographer Competition on 8 May 2019, at the Folly Lane Campus.
