Armed Forces Day celebrations begin on Monday 24th June when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country.
It is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. This year Herefordshire Armed Forces Day will take place on the 29th June 2019 in High Town 10 – 4 where there will be a Flag Raising Ceremony at 11.00am. speeches and performances by local schools. Look out for displays and information from local charities of their work in in support of the military, both serving and veterans. The day will culminate with The Rifles exercising their Freedom of Hereford.
During the week running up to Armed Forces Day there will also be a number of talks held at The Courtyard Theatre.
Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families during this week and is a way of thanking them for their work around the world where they promote peace, deliver aid, tackle drug smugglers, provide security and fight terrorism. It also allows the service of veterans to be recognised and celebrates their continued role within the military community.
An annual Reserves Day will be held on the Wednesday during that week celebrating individuals who give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces and who balance their civilian life with a military career to ensure that should their country require them, they would be ready to serve.
It is also an opportunity for The Cadet Forces (Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets and the Combined Cadet Force) who currently support over 130,000 young people in more than 3,000 locations across the UK to join the celebrations.
