Heritage Open Day at Hereford Cathedral
Heritage Open Day 2022 – Astounding Inventions
To celebrate this year’s theme for HOD, we will be exploring the astounding invention that is our Chained Library. Join us for a day of free activities exploring the locks and mechanisms that make our Chained Library so special.
The chaining of books was the most widespread and effective security system in European libraries from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, and Hereford Cathedral’s 17th-century Chained Library is the largest to survive with all its chains, rods and locks intact.
Drop-in anytime between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 17 September where the Hereford Cathedral team will be based in the North Transept with a range of activities to discover and enjoy. Try your hand at cyanotype prints; hear about our new Escape Room game; match the lock to the key and listen to a special talk about the library by our Archivist, Elizabeth Semper O’Keefe. Why not head across to the Chained Library & Mappa Mundi exhibition as well?!
