Mathias – This Worlde’s Joie and Dvořák – Te Deum Concert

This very special concert marks an equally special pair of anniversaries, marking both the 90th anniversary of the birth of William Mathias and the 50th anniversary of the première of his composition This Worlde’s Joie.

To quote from reviewer Colin Clarke (MusicWeb International), ‘William Mathias was completely and utterly at home writing for voices. It is an assurance that reaches its culmination in the staggering cantata, This Worlde’s Joie … It is a work of great strength, and also a work to treasure.’ The work is full of exuberant and exciting orchestral colour and features an especially extended percussion section.

This Worlde’s Joie is paired with Dvořák’s, Te Deum. Dvořák had been commissioned to write a work to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America, but when the promised text failed to arrive, he turned instead to the words of the Te Deuminspiring him ‘to write some of his finest music’ (John Bawden).

Up to 2 children under 16 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. Parties of 10 or more receive a group discount of 10%.
