
Seven Seas Interactive Sessions
Hands-on history at HARC (Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre). Using the archives extensive range of resources, the programme for this event will explore the adventures of Rear Admiral Nicholas Pateshall and his rise from midshipman to mayor of Hereford – with journeys all around the world en route.
You will look at how the expanding British Empire at the turn of the 19th century provided a wealth of new opportunities. The final session will be a discussion of Pateshall’s own Journal written on his voyage, taking convicts to Australia in 1803-1804.

Session 1: 1.15- 2.15pm
Nicholas Pateshall and his Voyages around the world – Yvonne Chapman will examine the early life and illustrious, swashbuckling career of this Herefordshire sailor.
2.25pm – 2.45pm – Refreshments and an opportunity to look at Nicholas’ journal and family papers.
Session 2: 2.45 – 4pm
Nicholas Pateshall’s Journal: Taking convicts to Australia 1803-1804
After an introduction to the early colonisation of Australia and the convict system, Dr Jane Adams and Yvonne Chapman will lead a discussion about what Nicholas Pateshall’s diaries can tell us.
