The Hildasholm Festival Ensemble

This evening’s program was conceived to be played in a large wooden church on the banks of lake Siljan in Northern Sweden. The churchyard leads into the gardens of Hildasholm – Hellens’ sister house. This is where we have all been collaborators in Hildasholms-musiken, Hellensmusic’s very own sibling.

The Hellens barn, at this beautiful time of year, has a quality and vibe that matches the tingling magic of Hildasholm at Midsummer, and we are very much looking forward to sharing an evening that will take us through great music – from the small and precious, to the great and glorious!

The Mozart Sonata K. 379 for piano and violin 379 in G-major has an opening movement worthy of an opera overture – the ensuing Variation movement has joy, sadness, and loveliness, finally powering into the wonderful exit of an Opera Buffa Finale.

Our two young lions, Toke and Daniele then tear into the Grieg Cello Sonata, after which comes the Dvorak f-minor opus. These folk-music influenced pieces, both written in 1883, and both inspired by the soil, the landscape, and people, of the composers’ homelands, were also declaring a great change from the power structures of an older European culture. They were saying, “we are no longer the vassals of kings and princes!”

The Grieg Cello Sonata opus 36 shows off the musicians’ virtuosity Grieg himself being a brilliant pianist – and also Grieg’s pride in the emerging ideas of Norwegian Nationalism.

Dvorak’s f-minor opus 65 trio, in four movements, is quite simply a monumental masterpiece, written in his symphonic style: dark, dramatic, aggressive, superseding the carefree manners of his “Slavonic” period.
