The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden, from the Director of previous Courtyard Productions Jane Eyre, Great Expectations and Pride and Prejudice, will be appearing at The Courtyard this October.
Based on the coming-of-age novel of the same name, follow Mary as she discovers a beautiful garden, where all secrets eventually unlock the mysteries of newfound hope. Experience this production of The Secret Garden like never before, as this novel is reimagined and brought to life on The Courtyard stage.
After the death of Mary’s parents, she travels to Yorkshire to stay with her uncle at Misselthwaite Manor. Inside this house, Mary finds many reclusive characters. Since the passing of her uncle’s wife, he has pushed everyone away including his disabled son Colin. Due to her being left alone to entertain herself, Mary discovers her auntie’s secret garden, locked and overgrown with vines. Mary becomes fascinated and is determined to restore the garden to its former glory.
The Secret Garden is the fifth ‘Pro-Am’ production from The Courtyard, which has a mix of Professional, Community and Youth Theatre cast. The Secret Garden will be directed by David Durant, who also directed last year’s highly acclaimed show, Jane Eyre.
David Durant, Associate Director, says: “I’m thrilled to be Directing The Courtyard’s Pro-Am production again this year. Building on the success of Jane Eyre, we want to make this special, particularly as it’s The Courtyard’s 25th Anniversary. Working with professional and community actors is both deeply rewarding and humbling at the same time. Having such a mixture brings a lot of laughter and fun as everyone is there to learn, create and ultimately enjoy the process. This process is as much about the final production as it is about the learning and passing on of skills as we get there.”
The Secret Garden will be in The Courtyard’s Main House between Tuesday 3 – Saturday 7 October at 7.30pm with matinees on Thursday 5 and Saturday 7 October at 2.30pm. The Saturday Matinee will have Audio Description available for Visually Impaired customers, delivered by The Courtyard’s Audio Description Association through a headset.
