Voices of Power by Luke Styles

Voices of Power is a World Premiere of a new oratorio by Luke Styles at Three Choirs Festival, Hereford

Following the successful premiere of his saxophone concerto Tracks In The Orbit in April, Luke now presents his oratorio which will make its World Premiere at Hereford Cathedral on Thursday 28 July as part of the prestigious Three Choirs Festival.

Voices of Power is set to a libretto by poet and author Jessica Walker and contemplates the nature of power across the centuries as seen through the perspective of powerful women over two millennia, from Roman times to the present day. The seven female “voices” are Boudica, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Margaret Thatcher, Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton and Jacinda Ardern.

Luke is well-known for his first Australian opera Ned Kelly, premiered to critical acclaim at the Perth Festival in 2019.  His latest opera Awakening Shadow will receive its Australian premiere at Sydney Chamber Opera in autumn 2022.

Luke was the first Glyndebourne Young Composer in Residence and the first Composer in Residence at the Foundling Museum since Handel, and he is currently Musician in Residence with the British Council in Brazil.  His works have been performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, BBC NOW, Philharmonia Orchestra and many others.
