With stunning countryside, wonderful woodlands and spectacular views to discover, above all the best way to see it all is on foot. Wassailing in Herefordshire

EVERYONE LOVES A GOOD WASSAIL! One of the jewels in Herefordshire’s crown is cider, its origin, heritage and traditions. With a wealth of inspiring small and larger makers Herefordshire’s ciders are now in demand across the globe and wassailing has become a popular pastime on twelfth night. What’s a Wassail? Wassailing is the special ingredient that goes into Herefordshire cider. So you may well ask what’s a ‘Wassail’? Well it was a practice first recorded in 1585 and Wassailing (Wassail meaning ‘Good Health or Be Well’) is an Anglo-Saxon custom in cider producing regions of England. So, as Herefordshire produces over half of the UK’s cider, we invite you to take part in this traditional event that blesses the orchards and promotes a good harvest for the coming year. Wassailing, on around Twelfth Night in January, brings many together to drink a concoction of mulled ale, served in huge silver or pewter bowls and mixed with curdled cream, apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar, small pieces of toast are often added and float on the top, its appearance leading some to call the drink ‘Lamb’s Wool’. With a torch light procession between orchards, a wassail King and Queen lead […]

Proper Afternoon Tea in Herefordshire

It is Afternoon Tea Week and we know just the place for Proper Afternoon Tea in Herefordshire It is said that the tradition of Afternoon Tea came about in the 1800s, when dinner was served somewhat later in the evening, and therefore the gap between that and luncheon was rather vast. Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford, is credited with first making it into a more formal and social occasion and, once Queen Victoria was seen to host Afternoon Tea receptions, it all became much more fanciful. The uplifting effects and refinement of the beverage of tea, coupled with the delights of dainty sandwiches and sweet treats (not too heavy, we don’t want to spoil dinner) have maintained this tradition as a wonderful occasion that is seeing a lovely and ever more glamorous revival. One Herefordshire venue that takes particular pleasure in making Afternoon Tea special is Aylestone Court Hotel, right in Hereford City. Enjoying ample parking, the elegant Georgian property, with its high ceilings and large windows, lends itself beautifully to a refined yet very relaxed experience in the traditional dining room. Run by husband and wife team Jo and Michael, their attention to detail is admirable. The use of […]

Wassailing Herefordshire

Enjoy lots of fun discovering and sharing of Herefordshire’s ancient tradition of Wassailing and get your new year off to a delightfully traditional Herefordshire start. Herefordshire has over 9000 acres of apple orchards provided artisan ciders to the world including Westons Cider and Ty Gwyn Cider. So it right that the county should participate in this ancient tradition of torch processions, blessing of trees and chanting. And usually followed by a hearty meal at the local pub! Wassailing takes place in all the cider producing regions of England. Visiting orchards, reciting incantations and singing to the trees is seen by many as an important ritual that promotes a good harvest for the coming year. Dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, Wassailing has now become associated with Christmas and is celebrated on Twelfth Night, the evening of the 5th January but some prefer tradition and choose ‘Old Twelvey Night’ which is January 17th. ‘Wassail’ means good health and was originally a drink of mulled ale, served in huge silver or pewter bowls and mixed with curdled cream, apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar. Small pieces of toast are often added and float on the top, its appearance leading some to call […]

Winter in Herefordshire heralds festivities galore and we have sought out some of the great markets, events and shopping treats. As is traditional, the whole county kicks off its festive run around six weeks before Christmas, with the individual market towns staging their own big lights switch on events followed by late night shopping and Sunday opening. If you’re looking for gifts with a difference, something thoughtfully chosen, perhaps handmade, look no further than the myriad of festive markets in December. The Herefordshire Guild of Craftsmen holds its seasonal emporium of handmade Herefordshire gifts in Ledbury town centre and Leominster stages its authentic Victorian Street Market 10 December. Or visit one of the county’s amazing galleries, like Old Chapel in Pembridge, brimming with all British textiles, ceramics, jewellery, art, sculptures and more. Hereford City itself hosts Hereford Contemporary; the showcase of artisan makers and designers at Left Bank. Hereford Arts Markets come alive in High Town and the Cathedral has its own beautiful Christmas […]

It is often seen now as an occasional indulgence or an ideal way to celebrate a special event. Here we want to share some fantastic places for afternoon tea in Herefordshire with you where you can treat yourself and whoever you choose to enjoy this wonderful past time. Herefordshire Food Heroes

You’ve probably gathered that Herefordshire is big on food and drink and we have some great Herefordshire Food Heroes. It’s natural, considering our agricultural heritage and rich farmland. But you might not know about some of the big and the up and coming names that started their roots (pun intended) in this very county. Bulmers, that giant of cider makers, originated here and still has a heritage, not to mention many family members. While its factory may now be renamed following the inevitable buy-outs, Strongbow’s origins are firmly in Herefordshire and always will be, and the popular Cider Museum operates on the original factory site. Tyrrells crisps were developed in Herefordshire by a local potato farmer William Chase and it is still the home of the brand, using locally grown spuds. Following a sell-out, William then went on to create Chase Vodka, now including a gin range, still using his own potatoes and still staying in his home county. He’s making a return to snacking so look out for his new popcorn range ‘Fit Corn’ too! Originally farmers and still so, Westons are following Bulmers for well known brands like Stowfords Press, produced from their Much Marcle plant. And prolific beer makers […]

Gardens and Historic Houses in Herefordshire

Gardens and historic houses in Herefordshire. Herefordshire is packed with history and culture, amazing properties and really beautiful gardens. Here is a flavour of those formal and less formal to enjoy in their different seasons. We couldn’t go much further without featuring the wonderful selection of National Trust properties that the county is lucky to host. And in this, the 300th anniversary of ‘Capability’ Brown’ let’s begin with the historic Berrington Hall near Leominster. Thomas Harley ancestral links to Herefordshire prompted his purchase of the Berrington estate in 1775, and his plans, as many still do, to retire to the area. Harley commissioned Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown to lay out the park, with its glorious views west towards Wales and the Black Mountains. He also took on Brown’s son-in-law, Henry Holland, to design him a new house in the latest French influenced Neo-classical style. Having used the finest London craftsmen, the mansion is arguably the most intact house built by Holland left today and includes the staircase hall, which is his most sophisticated experiment in space, light and colour. Holland also designed the arched gateway and former coachman’s home, which is now a charming holiday cottage. The 456 acres of parkland and […]

Herefordshire Black & White Villages

A photographers dream – Herefordshire Black & White Villages. Over the years north Herefordshire has maintained so much of its rich history and none more so than the picturesque villages that have preserved their chocolate box appeal and black and white charm in abundance. There is a route of some 40 miles that takes a beautiful tour through these picture book settlements and it’s perfect to travel by car or bike. Beginning in Leominster, the villages include Dilwyn, Weobley (pronounced Webbly), Sarnesfield, Kinnersely, Eardisley and Eardisland (both with a silent i), Kington, Lyonshall and Pembridge. Of course you will have spotted a couple of our market towns within that list, but generally the villages are well-served themselves with a shop, ever-popular tearoom and of course always at least one pub, often more. A bucket of rural bed and breakfasts can also be found sometimes in the quaint buildings and always in the surrounding and equally pretty farmhouses. Why not stay en route, take a picnic, sit on the river banks that will often flow through and dine at one of the hidden restaurants. The only thing monochrome about these villages is their paint work. Find out more on www.blackandwhitetrail.org
