Natural Cider Maker
Tom and Lydia of Artistraw Cider are passionate about making natural cider (no added sugar, water or sulphites – just apples). All of their cider is naturally fermented using wild yeasts, from apples picked by hand from unsprayed, low intensity traditional standard orchards in the local area. Located within walking distance of the beautiful ‘town of books’, Hay-on-Wye, they are lucky enough to enjoy access to some of the most beautiful and wild orchards in the country. They are currently planting an orchard just next to their cidery, which is gradually filling up with rare and interesting apple and perry pear varieties. Each tree has been grafted by hand, making what is fast becoming a very special orchard which also boasts stunning views of the Black Mountains.
Their bottle shop is open by appointment for cider sales all year round between the hours of 9am-10pm, although do get in touch to arrange an appointment on 01497 831366 so that they can make sure they’re at home and ready to welcome you! As well as cider and perry, at certain times of the year they also sell delicious veg and salads, fresh from their no-dig kitchen garden.
Cider tours and tasting run throughout the Summer months (April-September). This is your chance to learn all about the work going into creating the orchard, the creatures that inhabit it as well as all about how the cider is made. After admiring the afore mentioned spectacular views at the top of the hill and having a look at the fermentation rooms you will also get to enjoy a small glass of three different ciders, whilst sat in the permaculture garden.
Booking is essential for the tours. Please get in touch for more information.
