Round the year from Stonewall Hill. A journey in time and space’ by painters Mary Rennell and Richard Gilbert and photographer Brian Griffiths and displayed at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, Broad Street, Hereford. Featuring ‘Round the Year from Stonewall Hill’ (also known as ‘Four Seasons on the Welsh Border’) by Mary Rennell (1901 to 1981). 12 drawings in Chinese ink on rice paper (each 153 x 69 cm). Created over a year from November 1967 to October 1968 from the back seat of her Mini. Exhibited in 1970 at the National Library of Wales/Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, Aberystwyth, which then purchased the 12 panels. Now after 50 years they have emerged from storage to make their long overdue debut in the county of their creation. Lady Rennell lived at Rodd Court near Presteigne and loved depicting the Welsh March – its trees, landscape and old settlements. In these 12 panels, her magnum opus, she merges the techniques and potency of Chinese painting with her beloved borderland as subject. The 2021 Three Choirs Festival will take place in 2021 in Worcester: the dates are 24th – 31st July 2021. The week long three choirs festival rotates each year between Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester. 2021 is Worcesters turn. It is the oldest non competitive classical music event in the world at over 300 years! There will be daily Choral Evensong by choirs from the three cathedrals, evening concerts featuring the Three Choirs Festival Chorus and the Philharmonia Orchestra and a packed schedule of daytime events with a large community programme in each city. A trip to the Waterworks Museum on a Tuesday is a different experience for visitors. Whilst only a few of the Museum’s exbibits will be in operation, this is the Engineers’ Working Day when visitors can see the collection being maintained and our Volunteers have more time to engage with visitors and share their passion. There are stewards available to take visitors around the Museum (please ask at reception on arrival), but most visitors seem to prefer to self navigate and talk to the Volunteers at their own pace. During term time, visitors are also likely see a class of school children in our Visitor Centre benefitting from our free education service. A Tuesday is also a good time for visitors who prefer to avoid the loud noises of working machinery. Please note: Only powered pumps and engines are in operation a Tuesday (I.e. not the historic steam, hot-air, oil or gas engines and pumps). Hereford Gilbert & Sullivan Society are bringing live music back to your local area this summer with a performance of “Trial by Jury”, a comic light opera. The comic operetta (musical theatre) of Gilbert and Sullivan has been a mainstay of British theatre for over a century. The famous show-writing duo (think Rogers & Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, etc) penned at least 14 shows together, including the very famous “Pirates of Penzance” (see us perform this in March at the Courtyard Theatre) and “Mikado”. “Trial by Jury” is one of their first collaborations. For those who might not have experienced G&S before, “Trial”, a short operetta at just 45 minutes, makes the perfect introduction. The story is told through song, with catchy tunes and witty English libretto, very different to the style of typical opera one might imagine. In typical G&S style, “Trial” follows a topsy-turvy storyline. Angelina, a jilted bride, is suing her would-have-been husband Edwin, for ‘breach of promise of marriage’. A corrupt judge and a biased jury create an unusual trial with an even more unorthodox outcome! Kids at the Court is a summer club for children aged 5 – 11 taking place in the in the safe and inspiriting environment of Barton Court. Children outside these age ranges may be accepted if we have the facilities available. Combining play with learning to give each child a fun day out that enriches them, they will dance, draw, paint, mess about with mud, toast marshmallows and generally run about in a carefree way while our trained staff keep a careful eye on them. The day starts promptly at 9.30am when the children are split into age groups and go onto either a dance or art session with their peers. After break, when we give them drinks and fruit, they swap activity. At lunch, they sit and eat their packed lunches and chat about what they have been doing in the morning. Then, rested and refreshed, they have free play for half an hour. We feel that it is important for them to have the opportunity to decide whether or not engage with the games available during their free time. For example, a group of girls sat chatting and piling up pea gravel rather than take part in rounders. […]

This activity week gives you the opportunity and support to design, build and test a ground vehicle that could do this important work. We’ll help you think through what obstacles your vehicle has to avoid, how you can keep your vehicle stable, how it can carry the medical supplies. This is a family/accompanied activity and we welcome teams of 2 where a young person aged 8- 17 is accompanied by a responsible adult. Children, bring a parent! Grandchildren, bring a grandparent! Do your kids think history is horrid? Just dates and facts that have no relevance? Boring and dry as dust? I know I did until I had an inspirational teacher who made it fun. One of our team for the summer camp is a Cambridge history graduate whose mission is to get children to love history as much as she does. A big enactment fan, she will be dressing up as a peasant and taking the kids through what it was like to be young in the Middle Ages in an engaging and fun way. They will learn the games their ancestors played, how to make the clothes they wore and what food they ate. Some of it is gross which the children will love hearing about. Then, with Laura’s help, they will recreate the marching element of a battle. This is a fun additional class at the end of the core day. After a year of distance teaching, this up close and personal taste of history might reignite a spark of interest in an academic subject that – done right – should be fascinating. You can now enjoy a relaxing three days at The Creative Granary in Norton Canon, learning how to dye fabric with plants, do relief and flora printing, abstract painting and embroidery. The program is as follows: Friday ~ Dyeing Fabric with Plants You will learn about mordanting fabric, then gather plants from my dyers’ garden and process these for dyeing muslin. It will take one hour to make the dye, you will then remove the vegetation and place your fabric in the boiling hot dye and leave it until the following day. To achieve the best results cellulose fibres require 24 hours to dye. The french muslin fabric you will be using will have been mordanted in advance as this can be time consuming and cannot be done on the same day as the dyeing. I will then provide you with a selection of designs from which you will choose three to carve. Saturday ~ Relief Printing You will remove the fabric from the dye and put it to dry before you will be able to relief print this with the three designs you chose to carve on Friday. At the August Tasting Day, the Swan Brewery team will be launching a brand new beer, Plumage, a 4.8% amber summer ale, featuring Herefordshire Cascade and Endeavour hops and heritage Plumage Archer malt. At Swan Brewery Tasting Days, on the Enterprise Park in Leominster, there’s a drink on the house for all visitors, brewing to watch, the shop to browse and a dart board for practice. Be among the first people to taste a new seasonal beer, alongside other ales from the Swan Brewery. Jimmy Swan is known for his creativity in developing new beers all crafted using only the 4 ingredients of water, malt, hops and yeast. Leominster’s Swan Brewery was set up in 2015 by Jimmy Swan, a brewer of over 25 years’ experience, with the aim to brew classic beer styles exceptionally well. The brewery is 10 barrels in size, a microbrewery, which means each batch is 2,880 pints of expertly brewed ale. The Carnival Field, which is situated at The Ropewalk will open to the public at 11:00am. Every year the annual procession makes its way around the town’s centre, showing off a magnificent display of floats and fancy dress. Anyone can take part in the carnival, with some great prizes up for grabs. The carnival was revived in 1977 by a dedicated committee in celebration of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee after years of there being no parade in the town. Spend a Sunday at The Creative Granary in Norton Canon, doing Flora Printing and Abstract Painting. Abstract Painting Express your inner self and let yourself go as you free your mind of everyday objects allowing the ink to find its own place on the soft touch viscose fabric. The ink should fall like water flowing from a tap. Paint brushes are banned and the only tools available will be a teaspoon and your own hands. When the painting has dried you will heat seal it. Flora Printing Although a more controlled craft, this is no less enjoyable. You will collect vegetation from any of the three gardens and hedgerows on the farm and when brought back to the granary you will dissect this before reconstructing it into a picture and print it onto pre-prepared calico fabric. The fabric is prepared with a binder. Whilst it is unlikely that the picture will be washed, it still needs to be light fast and the binding is carried out in advance as it is very time consuming and can take several weeks to complete. Spend a Sunday at The Creative Granary in Norton Canon, doing Flora Printing and Abstract Painting. Abstract Painting Express your inner self and let yourself go as you free your mind of everyday objects allowing the ink to find its own place on the soft touch viscose fabric. The ink should fall like water flowing from a tap. Paint brushes are banned and the only tools available will be a teaspoon and your own hands. When the painting has dried you will heat seal it. Flora Printing Although a more controlled craft, this is no less enjoyable. You will collect vegetation from any of the three gardens and hedgerows on the farm and when brought back to the granary you will dissect this before reconstructing it into a picture and print it onto pre-prepared calico fabric. The fabric is prepared with a binder. Whilst it is unlikely that the picture will be washed, it still needs to be light fast and the binding is carried out in advance as it is very time consuming and can take several weeks to complete. When the Circus of Horrors started in Glastonbury ’95 people thought it wouldn’t run for 25 weeks let alone 25 years, yet here we are a quarter of a century later and the Circus of Horrors is still touring all over the World, still getting rave reviews & still getting loads of media coverage. The show performed for the 4th consecutive year at last years Download Festival and it also returned to the Glastonbury Festival. As part of the 25th Anniversary tour it performed with The Damned at The London Palladium, a show promoted by Hammer House of Horrors and was preceded by torch light funeral cortège through London’s West End where a new Guinness World Record was set for over 1040 Vampires in the same pace at the same time. Olliefest was first held in 2015 in response to the tragic loss of a member of Ross Rugby Club, Ollie Floyd. He was just 20-years-old when he died in March 2015, and was a popular member of the local Rugby Club. Ollie was a fun-loving, cheeky young lad who had a real zest for life! Unsure of how to bring the community together, friends and relatives put together a free community event featuring live music including several well-known headline acts, along with a friendly rugby match at Ollie’s favourite place – the Ross Rugby Club! The first event was a spur of the moment response to put something together, to acknowledge the grief of losing such a well-loved friend but to also lift the community’s spirits and celebrate Ollie’s life. The event has grown massively over the last 6 years and now offers a wide variety of musical entertainment as well as a funfair, inflatables and plenty of places to eat and drink. It is intended that Ross Regatta will go ahead in 2021! TO BE CONFIRMED, CHECK THE WEBSITE FROM JUNE 21 ONWARDS. Ross Regatta is a charitable run event that is held in Ross on Wye. Each year, over the August Bank Holiday, the Ross Regatta brings boat crews and spectators from all over the country. In 2019 the event attracted almost 1000 competitors aged from 11 to 77 competing in 140 events. The regatta will be held over the August bank holiday weekend as usual (29-30 August) with dragon boat racing on Saturday 28 August. Firework Champions at Eastnor Castle is the only one of its type in the UK where the audience have the capability to vote for the team they liked the most using their mobile phone – purely for fun. The ink should fall like water flowing from a tap. Paint brushes are banned and the only tools available will be a teaspoon and your own hands. When the painting has dried you will heat seal it. Flora Printing Although a more controlled craft, this is no less enjoyable. You will collect vegetation from any of the three gardens and hedgerows on the farm and when brought back to the granary you will dissect this before reconstructing it into a picture and print it onto pre-prepared calico fabric. The fabric is prepared with a binder. Whilst it is unlikely that the picture will be washed, it still needs to be light fast and the binding is carried out in advance as it is very time consuming and can take several weeks to complete. The program is as follows: Friday ~ Dyeing Fabric with Plants You will learn about mordanting fabric, then gather plants from my dyers’ garden and process these for dyeing muslin. It will take one hour to make the dye, you will then remove the vegetation and place your fabric in the boiling hot dye and leave it until the following day. To achieve the best results cellulose fibres require 24 hours to dye. The french muslin fabric you will be using will have been mordanted in advance as this can be time consuming and cannot be done on the same day as the dyeing. I will then provide you with a selection of designs from which you will choose three to carve. Saturday ~ Relief Printing You will remove the fabric from the dye and put it to dry before you will be able to relief print this with the three designs you chose to carve on Friday. The Malvern Hills Challenge was established in 2009 to raise funds for the charity Help for Heroes and to date has raised over £100,000. The 2021 Challenge will be the10th Anniversary event and will take place on Saturday 18th September starting and finishing at Priory Park. At Registration you will get your 2021 t-shirts and registered numbers and then there will be various options available to get to the start. Spend a relaxing weekend making pots on the potter’s wheel. The therapeutic benefits of working with soft clay on the potter’s wheel are well documented. Participants often leave the studio on Sunday afternoon feeling totally de-stressed and with an overwhelming sense of well-being. “I feel like I’ve spent a weekend at a health farm!” commented a recent punter. Small friendly groups and eight electric potter’s wheels ensure plenty of individual attention and guidance. You will explore a whole range of making techniques based upon the potter’s wheel including: throwing, turning, attaching handles & motifs and decorating methods using under-glaze and coloured slip. Putley – Fruitful and Fabulous in Autumn (Pretty in Pink in Spring) Nestled in the apple orchards ‘twixt the Wye Valley and the Malvern Hills lies the Herefordshire village of Putley. On a soft September afternoon, with the heady scent of apples hanging heavy on the bough, visitors are warmly invited to enjoy a visit to five or six peaceful Putley gardens in all of their Autumn splendour. This year, Putley Open Gardens is being held on Saturday 25th September to coincide with the popular Malvern Autumn Show. Funds raised will contribute to the upkeep of the Parish Hall and Church. Included in this year’s event is a new garden, cleared completely at the start of lockdown 2020, with yew, espalier fruit trees and native hedging forming the boundaries; a lawn, lavender and a selection of roses. Another, started in 2017, now magnificent, features a lawn, potager, raised beds, a length of gabion wall and sumptuous planting of shrubs and perennials. A third is a long-established cottage garden with pond, cider apple orchard and, perhaps, cider. Swan Brewery Tasting Days, on the Enterprise Park in Leominster, enjoy a drink on the house for all visitors, brewing to watch, the shop to browse and a dart board for practice. Look out for a variety of local food vendors with one chosen each month to compliment the featured beer of the month. Be among the first people to taste a new seasonal beer, alongside other ales from the Swan Brewery. Jimmy Swan is known for his creativity in developing new beers all crafted using only the 4 ingredients of water, malt, hops and yeast. Leominster’s Swan Brewery was set up in 2015 by Jimmy Swan, a brewer of over 25 years’ experience, with the aim to brew classic beer styles exceptionally well. The brewery is 10 barrels in size, a microbrewery, which means each batch is 2,880 pints of expertly brewed ale. Raw materials are chosen with care: about 85% of the hops used are grown in Herefordshire or Worcestershire; the brewing grain is grown in the east of England; a unique strain of yeast is used which is propagated and harvested each time. Whilst only a few of the Museum’s exbibits will be in operation, this is the Engineers’ Working Day when visitors can see the collection being maintained and our Volunteers have more time to engage with visitors and share their passion. There are stewards available to take visitors around the Museum (please ask at reception on arrival), but most visitors seem to prefer to self navigate and talk to the Volunteers at their own pace. During term time, visitors are also likely see a class of school children in our Visitor Centre benefitting from our free education service. A Tuesday is also a good time for visitors who prefer to avoid the loud noises of working machinery. Please note: Only powered pumps and engines are in operation a Tuesday (I.e. not the historic steam, hot-air, oil or gas engines and pumps). The exhibition of six large scale tapestries by the Turner-Prize winning artist, Grayson Perry, explores the British fascination with taste and class, and will be displayed at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery. Grayson Perry’s The Vanity of Small Differences tells the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste. Inspired by William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress the six tapestries, measuring 2m x 4m each, chart the ‘class journey’ made by young Tim Rakewell and include many of the characters, incidents and objects Grayson Perry encountered on journeys through Sunderland, Tunbridge Wells and The Cotswolds for the television series ‘All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry’. Get involved – This is your opportunity to take inspiration from Grayson Perry’s exhibition and create your own work of art – a tapestry, textile or collage in any media, with a narrative – although not on the same scale! Eastnor Castle Mud Bath Race is a family friendly mud bath race around the beautiful and muddy trails of the Eastnor Castle Estate. Runners take on the toughest of the Land Rover trails with waist deep mud and water around the course. After the run, enjoy a hog roast and beer after the race for just £5 extra. You will explore a whole range of making techniques based upon the potter’s wheel including: throwing, turning, attaching handles & motifs and decorating methods using under-glaze and coloured slip. Cost: £280 Includes refreshments, lunch, materials, (1-4 pots) firing, glazing and the cost of posting your finished masterpieces. Content: Day 1 The workshop starts at 10am where you’ll be individually assigned a potter’s wheel for the duration of the workshop. After tea/coffee, introductions and initial demonstration you will be taken as a group, step by step, through the pot throwing process. A trip to the Waterworks Museum on a Tuesday is a different experience for visitors. Whilst only a few of the Museum’s exbibits will be in operation, this is the Engineers’ Working Day when visitors can see the collection being maintained and our Volunteers have more time to engage with visitors and share their passion. There are stewards available to take visitors around the Museum (please ask at reception on arrival), but most visitors seem to prefer to self navigate and talk to the Volunteers at their own pace. During term time, visitors are also likely see a class of school children in our Visitor Centre benefitting from our free education service. A Tuesday is also a good time for visitors who prefer to avoid the loud noises of working machinery. Please note: Only powered pumps and engines are in operation a Tuesday (I.e. not the historic steam, hot-air, oil or gas engines and pumps).
