Hereford Cathedral celebrates 800th birthday of the Magna Carta by putting its 1217 Magna Carta on display in a special exhibition running to 31 December 2017. ‘Law, Life and Landscape’ celebrates the 800th anniversary of the document, which forms the centrepiece of the presentation in Hereford cathedral library’s exhibition gallery. The 1217 Charter brought to an end a civil war in England which the more famous 1215 Charter of Liberties had failed to conclude. It was the first to be called ‘Magna’ (Great), to distinguish it from the smaller Forest Charter published alongside it. Hereford Cathedral possesses one of only four surviving official copies of the 1217 Magna Carta. It is too fragile to be on permanent display, although it did go on a 37,000-mile world tour in 2015, when it was seen by 25,000 people. This is a wonderful opportunity to see this piece of history and take in the splendours of Hereford Cathedral. Characters from several hundred years of history will come to life in Hereford with guided tours of the College Cloisters this summer as they present It’s a Vicar’s life at Hereford Cathedral ‘It’s a Vicar’s Life!’ is a light-hearted, living history interpretation of the lives and exploits of some of the colourful historical characters who have lived and worked at the cathedral since the Middle Ages. The guided tour takes visitors into College Cloisters, an area not usually open to the public, which was originally built towards the end of the fifteenth century as accommodation for the cathedral’s vicars choral – priests specially employed to sing the services. St John’s Walk, the covered way between the cloisters and the cathedral, was recently restored with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Visitors may encounter a seventeenth-century vicar choral, James Reed; Nelly Pearce, one of the college laundrymaids; or Bishop Richard Mayew, who died in 1516 and is buried in the cathedral. For the 6th year the annual Kington Walking Festival 2017, will take place in September. The historic drovers’ town of Kington is nestled below Hergest Ridge and stands alone, from a walking perspective, and as a result, has more long-distance paths converging on the town than almost anywhere else in the UK. The Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail, the Herefordshire Trail, Mortimer Trail from Ludlow, and the Wyche Way from Broadway all pass through (or start/finish) in the town. The Kington Walking Festival, which this year takes place from September 21 until 24, is the primary annual event of the Kington Walks charity and this year the programme is bigger and better than ever with over 40 walks. New this year is a two day circular walk from Clun with an overnight stay in Bishops Castle and an event for the less able bodied called ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. Free admission to the Waterworks Museum Each year the Trustees of the Museum allow free public access to the Waterworks Museum in support of the national ‘Heritage Open Day’. This year’s opening is being held on 24 September as another special event is being held at the Museum (Hereford’s first Steampunk Weekend) on the weekend other venues in Hereford celebrate Heritage Open Day. On 24 September, the Museum will be open between 12-4pm with all the Museum’s engines operating in-steam. Raise money for Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s Reserves Appeal as you Walk for Wildlife though beautiful Herefordshire countryside. The walk will run through the heart of Herefordshire from the historic Lugg Meadow on the outskirts of Hereford city following the picturesque River Lugg north through riverside pastures to finish at Queenswood Country Park & Arboretum. The walk will cover 12.5 miles and will follow public footpaths as well as routes across private land, opened exclusively for this event. Sponsorship Entrants can in addition seek sponsorship with all money raised going to the Reserves Appeal. The entrant who raises the most money will win a hamper of Wildlife Trust Goodies. UK Fungus Day is a celebration of all things mycological, celebrate in style with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust – UK Fungus Day at Queenswood with the Herefordshire Fungus Survey Group. There will be a rolling programme of fungus forays into the woods throughout the day as well as a display of weird and wonderful fungi, presentations and talks. People can also bring in fungus specimens for identification from the experts. The forays will cover no more than one mile on easy terrain. The Huntington Chase will run again (for the tenth time) on Saturday 14th October 2017, starting as always at the Village Hall in Huntington at 12 noon. Ride a horse, walk, run or cycle for fun over 11km course, taking in Hergest Ridge and finishing at The Swan Inn for refreshments and food. Runners, riders and bikers (pedal variety) are all welcome. And so too are walkers, introduced for the first time last year when nearly 30 took part. Following Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s AGM, naturalist and TV presenter Nick Baker will give a talk which will be part autobiography and part a hard hitting call to action. Building a naturalist is a journey through the development of a life-long biophile. Expect a journey that spans the last 44 years and zings all over the planet – connecting via experiences – familiar UK habitats to stories from more exotic shores. Nick will touch on subjects as broad as how keeping caterpillars in a jam jar lead to working with Britain’s rarest butterfly, how playing with grass-snakes helped Nick tackle a cobra, the similarities between Badgers and Black Rhino and how the most endangered species in the world is a child playing free in nature. This talk explores why this is and suggests how we go about rewinding a young generation and in doing so – save the world. Ferrous2017 is a brand new festival which opens in Hereford on Friday 20th October 2017 when the city centre will come alive to the sights and sounds of six hot metal forges as blacksmiths and members of the public gather in High Town to create a stunning new piece of art. The main elements of the event are: Have a Go Forging in aid of St Michael’s Hospice in High Town, 20th to 22nd October An opportunity to try your hand at blacksmithing by creating a stylish Gingko leaf which will be part of the bench commissioned by Ferrous2017 from leading artist blacksmith, Ambrose Burne. The bench is destined for the garden at St Michael’s Hospice, but which will be on show in High Town as it is made over the weekend of the event. A guided bird walk around Bodenham Lake which will include access to the restricted section. The walk will provide an insight into the species and ecology of the site and you will learn about the Trust’s exciting plans for enhancing the habitat. The walk will be around 3km on flat terrain, with stops off at key locations such as the bird hide. No dogs permitted on the walk due to nesting birds and otters. Children’s School Holiday Pottery Sessions are fabulous, themed, workshops that take place every school break at Eastnor Pottery. An ideal opportunity for aspiring young potters to work with professional, ceramic artists. Experience ‘hands on’ real clay with an exciting variety of making techniques. A different theme every time includes either a go on the potter’s wheel or work with coloured slips. The 1 ½ hr sessions take place throughout the day and are designed to suit either 4-8yrs and 9-12yrs. This is one of the 20 days in 2017 when the Waterworks Museum will be open between 12-4pm with all the Museum’s engines operating in steam offering a Family Fun Day. The Waterworks Museum has something for the whole family. There are trails for the children and interactive devices across the Museum which visitors, and especially children, are encouraged to touch and use. This includes the Heritage Water Park (a children’s play ’n’ learn zone) in which there are nine life size devices for pumping, moving and filtering water. Inside the Visitor Centre there is a play area for younger children. The Museum is also the home to a permanent exhibition about Hereford in WW2 and is generally a time capsule of social history for Herefordshire, the Marches and parts of Wales. And the museum has one of the widest range of working steam, oil, gas and hot air engines engines in the UK, many of which can be seen doing what they were intend for – pumping water. Our artists in turn really enjoy meeting their customers and chatting about their work or discussing bespoke commissions. Everything sold at Hereford Art Markets must be produced by the stall holder – we do not allow any bought in or imported crafts. The Charity was set up in memory of Emma Louise Young (E.L.Y.). Emma tragically lost her life on the 30th September 2010 in a road traffic accident. She was just 23.The sole purpose of E.L.Y is to offer a one-off payment towards funeral costs for families in Herefordshire if they lose a son or daughter between the ages 17 to 25 in a road traffic accident. The countdown has begun to the Hereford Three Choirs Festival 2018. Highlights include artists such as The Philharmonia Orchestra, Artisitc Director Geraint Bowen, Soloists Clare Hammond, Ruby Hughes and Mahan Esfahani.
