Volunteers at Hereford Cathedral

Hereford Cathedral are looking to recruit new volunteers to join the army of Guides, Welcomers, Caterers, Sunday School helpers and the many more diverse roles within the diverse community whose members participate in its mission and ministry in a host of ways.

More than 300 volunteers play their part in the day-to-day life of the cathedral.

Welcomer Volunteer:  

• The Welcomer is usually the first point of contact for visitors
• Ability to interact with public, notifying them of the day’s activities
• Ensure that people have a good experience
• Personal skills to engage, inform and assist
• Commitment: Usually 1-2 hour weekly/fortnightly shift as per rota

Mappa Mundi & Chained Library Exhibition Volunteer: 

• Meeting and greeting tourists
• Ability to answer questions to maximise visitor experience/enjoyment
• A helpful and informative presence for self-guiding visitors
• An interest in historic artefacts and flexibility to be positioned in different parts of the Exhibition
• Basic understanding of the contents of the Exhibition
• Usually 2 hour weekly/fortnightly shift as per rota

Cathedral Guide: 

• Guiding
• Informing
• Interact with group of people
• Taking around, pointing out, answer
• Willingness to develop and impart knowledge of the cathedral
• Interest in history/architecture/religion/art (at least one area)
• Daily tours (2 a day) 45 mins – 1 hour, commitment dependant on your availability/as per rota

Garden Guide: 

• Guiding
• Informing
• Interact with group of people
• Taking around, pointing out, answer
• Willingness to develop and impart knowledge of the cathedral
• Basic knowledge/interest in history/plants/gardening
• Seasonal tours 1 hour twice a week, May – September as per rota
