Strangers and Others on the Hereford Mappa Mundi
This talk will explore the Hereford World Map’s tiny, meticulously drawn figures of strange and foreign friends and foes in relation to medieval religious beliefs and cultural attitudes. Some of these figures were familiar outsiders; others, such as the ‘Monstrous Peoples’ were impossible to know. We will see how these exotic peoples and creatures helped express the vast diversity of God’s Creation as well as the importance of Others in a medieval worldview.
Debra Higgs Strickland is Professor of Medieval Art History in the School of Culture and Creative Arts at the University of Glasgow.
