A History In Stitches at Hellens Manor

A special open day invites visitors to view the remarkable crewelwork frieze which serves as a visual chronicle of Hellens Manor. Stretching nearly ten metres in length and dates from pre-1066 to the present day.

Conceived in 2017, the piece was brought to life over eight years by a dedicated team of thirteen Arts Society Heritage Volunteers, a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and creative collaboration. Using traditional techniques and heritage shades of crewel wool, the volunteers captured the manor’s rich story from its earliest inhabitants and noble families, to the stunning landscape of the Marcle Ridge, heritage trees, and traditional orchards.

Usually housed in the Minstrels’ Gallery above the Great Hall, this special one-day exhibition offers a unique opportunity to view the ten-metre-long embroidery displayed in the Great Barn, together with historical research, the design’s evolution, extensive samples, and source materials.
