The Waterworks Museum – Hereford is a brilliant day out for the whole family as well as the engineering and history enthusiast. Sprig’s Granary is named after Sprig, the famous 1927 Grand National winner, bred on the former stud where the property is situated at Bacton Green in the Golden Valley area of Herefordshire. The Granary, positioned opposite the famous race horse’s stable, is now a beautiful holiday home – bright, light, spacious, private, and luxuriously comfortable, and a spectacular place to stay. The Laskett Gardens is uniquely autobiographical Laskett Gardens is one of the largest private formal gardens to be laid out in England since 1945, the gardens form an ever evolving creation over forty years of the historian, writer and diarist Sir Roy Strong and his late wife, the designer, Julia Trevelyan Oman. Their four acres celebrate an orchestration of surprise and thrilling vistas. There are some twenty different and contrasting ‘rooms’ including a rose garden, a knot garden, an orchard, a pleached lime avenue, parterres, herbaceous borders and the Colonnade Court. New additions to the Gardens include an Italianate grotto and a pond approached through a winding woodland walk. This is the Sissinghurst of the late twentieth century; a unique portrait of its makers, with the story of their marriage and their extraordinary lives woven into its very fabric. Montpelier Cottage is a very special place hidden at the end of a track. Montpelier Cottage in North Herefordshire is surrounded by woods but yet only five miles from the book town of Hay on Wye. There are 4 acres of garden including wild flower meadows, ponds and an orchard. Guests are free to wander as they will or walk any of the footpaths which adjoin the property. There is a willow fringed children’s’ playground tucked at the bottom of one of the fields with swings and a trampoline and climbing frame. Made in Ross is a collective of artists and craft workers who are based in the historic Market House in the centre of Ross-on-Wye. Made in Ross is delighted to be working with The Courtyard and Ross Council in this iconic building in the very heart of Ross which provides a fascinating venue for contemporary arts and crafts. There are currently fourteen members – blacksmithing, ceramics, Chinese brush painting, felting, furniture, glass, mosaics, photography, sculptures made from recycled materials, silver jewellery, textiles, watercolours, wood carving and much more besides, all at affordable prices. Members manage the exhibition space in the Market House. They work as volunteers keeping the Market House open to visitors seven days a week, from 10 am – 4 pm. Workshops and demonstrations are also held at the Market House on a regular basis. They are also a voluntary Tourist Information Site for the town and local area. Hellens Manor is an old beautiful private home Still serving as a residence but is also open to the public, administered by the Pennington-Mellor-Munthe Charity Trust, and hosting tour groups as well as cultural events such as lectures, concerts, school field-trips, and literary discussions, forming a key part of the cultural life of Much Marcle. The inside of the manor is impressive with Tudor style architecture and fine delicacies. The manor was originally occupied by French Monks but a short while after in the year of 1096 the manor was granted to the De Balun family who became witnesses of the signing of the Magna Carta. In 1301 Hellens went to Lords Audley, a nephew James who was companion to the Black Prince rented the manor for a pair of silver spurs. Afterwards he then leased the manor to Walter De Helyon who then later gave his name to the house. Over the following centuries the manor passed through several hands including those of Richard Walwyn who became occupier of Hellens Manor in the late 14th century, in the 15th century the wealthy family made many changes to the house. Kington has three markets in the Market Hall and its precinct. Tuesday is a General Retail Market, from 8am – 2pm. Friday is Local Food and Crafts, from 9am – 1pm. From June to December 2016 there will be an Arts and Crafts Market on the third Saturday of each month, from 10am-4pm. KINGTON ART AND CRAFT MARKET: CALL FOR MAKERS The Kington Art and Craft Market is being re-launched in June 2016, and is currently taking bookings from makers who would like to promote the Arts in a town where many creative people are quietly working away in their studios. The Art and Craft Market will take place between June and December on the third Saturday of each month, from 10am – 4pm. The Hay Makers is a co operative gallery run by 9 designer makers. It was established in the 1987 and has gained an enviable reputation for selling an exciting and varied selection of high quality crafts at affordable prices in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The gardens are as lovingly cared for today as they always have been and maintained in the Banks Family. Lawrence Banks and his wife, Elizabeth have managed the Gardens since 1988. He is the former Treasurer of the Royal Horticultural Society and she is a noted landscape architect and the RHS President since 2011. They have continued the tradition of planting newly introduced plants, particularly in the Maple Grove, which have been a feature of the garden since 1900. There are many compelling 20th century stories to uncover Croft Castle sits deep in the heart of Herefordshire countryside surrounded by 1500 acres of historic woodland, farm and parkland. This intimate house became the Croft family home before the Domesday Book. 2017 is the 60th anniversary of Croft coming into our care when it was bought by the National Trust in 1957. Throughout 2017 we will be researching and sharing stories from that era and you can reminisce by getting involved in some of our 1950s events. In the castle you can live life as Sir James Croft and find out how the family bought back their home in 1923. Explore the family photographs or sit and read through the auction catalogues. Look out for the 1950s photographs and memorabilia which detail how Croft was at risk of demolition before 1957 and what it was like here then. Big kids and little kids can enjoy 1950s games and toys in the family room, complete with costumes for dressing up. This year, supported by internationally renowned artists Heather and Ivan Morison, the team at Berrington Hall begin the planning and showcasing of the Walled Garden and Pleasure Grounds Restoration Project. Inviting visitors to discover more about key figures from the building’s past At the heart of this 687-hectare (1700-acre) farmed estate lies Lower Brockhampton, a romantic timber-framed manor house dating back to the late 14th century. The house is surrounded by a moat and is entered via a charming timber-framed gatehouse, built 1530-40. There are miles of walks through the park and woodland, featuring ancient trees, the picturesque Lawn Pool and various sculptures depicting parts of the history of Brockhampton and the local area. This is home to a rich variety of wildlife, along with historic farming breeds such as Hereford cattle and Ryeland sheep. Steeped in history, Brockhampton has witnessed many changes. Until 2014 the rear rooms in the manor house were being lived in and not open to the public. Over the last few years they have focused on peeling back the layers of history to show visitors how seven centuries of occupation have shaped the building you see today. Mappa Mundi The Mappa Mundi is a unique medieval treasure, recording how scholars interpreted the world over 700 years ago. More than a thousand drawings and inscriptions show cities and towns, Biblical events, plants, animals, birds, strange creatures and monstrous races. The map bears the name of its author ‘Richard of Haldingham or Lafford’ (Holdingham and Sleaford in Lincolnshire). Recent research suggests a date of about 1300 for the creation of the map. Meadow Arts – Contemporary art in unusual places At meadow Arts as well as a vibrant exhibition programme at partner venues across the West Midlands, Meadow Arts places public artworks at sites in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire as part of its Public Commissions programme. They bring work by artists who usually exhibit in galleries in major cities in the UK and abroad to local spaces, where the artwork can shed a new light on the stories and traditions of that place, giving new audiences a chance to discover the art. The artworks in the programmes have often been commissioned by contemporary artists at the cutting edge of artistic practice and range from artists who live within the region, to national and international artists. Magical Aardvark Books is situated in a series of stone barns in Brampton Bryan Brampton Bryan is an historic and beautiful village in the north of Herefordshire on the Shropshire border on the A4113 road between Leintwardine and Knighton. Aardvark Books bookshop contains over 50,000 new and second hand titles across all subject areas, and has a very popular café which serves refreshments, home-made cakes and light lunches. Almost all new books are half-price or less, and the shop includes a fantastic range of books from latest blockbusters to antiquarian gems. There is ample parking for cars and coaches, and the café can seat 40 people comfortably. Throughout the year Aardvark organises a range of events including art exhibitions, a Civil War Re-enactment in conjunction with the English Civil War Society (in August), plus markets and music events.
