Step Out into Space at Hereford Cathedral

Visit Hereford Cathedral this October and step out into Space, the cathedral’s first sound and light installation, produced by Luxmuralis.

A spectacular light show experience will transform the inside of Hereford Cathedral on the evenings of Wednesday 16 October – Saturday 19 October 2024. Space will invite visitors to experience the cathedral in a whole new way as they walk amongst the stars and planets. This unique event will give viewers the opportunity to ponder our relationship with the universe through a series of light and sound installations which will be projected onto the stunning architecture. As visitors journey through space, they can watch galaxies emerge above them and explore humanity’s ambition to adventure beyond.

The show has been created by award-winning artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, made up of Peter Walker (sculptor) and David Harper (composer), and features the creation story and the Big Bang as well as a view of Earth as if looking back from space under a galaxy of stars. Luxmuralis, which means light murals in Latin, take their son-et-lumiere (sound and light) art to a variety of places and spaces, and has already attracted attention at many UK cathedrals, bringing thousands of new visitors and pilgrims through the doors of such sacred buildings.

The Very Revd Sarah Brown, Dean of Hereford, said: “I am excited to welcome you to this great spectacle at Hereford Cathedral as we consider our place in the universe, the extraordinary grandeur and beauty of the cosmos and the miraculous functionality of what gives us life on Earth. Here we can reflect on earth’s beginnings and perhaps its ultimate end in the context of the whole of creation. For me, as the psalmist says, ‘the heavens declare the glory of God’. Perhaps you agree and stand in awe, or perhaps you see nothing but swirling gases and cosmic accidents of physics. Either way, this wonderful light show will make us stand in amazement and wonder. I look forward to experiencing this with you.”

Peter Walker, Luxmuralis, said: “We are all responsible for this small planet which we started to explore in the 1960s, Climate Change is part of the narrative. The artwork is about reflecting inwards as much as it is about reflecting outwards, and about how we take care of our small piece of the universe.”

Emma Maggs, Head of Development at Hereford Cathedral, said: “We are delighted that Space has received £15000 from the UK Government, through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, enabling us to bring such an exciting project to Hereford. We have also received sponsorship and support from a range of local businesses to help us welcome thousands of visitors to Hereford across the four nights that the light show will take place. We hope that the city will be as excited as we are!”

Space will take place on Wednesday 16 – Saturday 19 October from 6.20pm.

Tickets available to purchase from The Courtyard Box Office from Monday 3 June and more information can be found here: herefordcathedral.org/space-luxmuralis.

Space has also been sponsored by The Wye Clinic, The Beefy Boys, C J Bayliss, ETL Systems, John Finch Computers Ltd. and Gabbs Solicitors as well as receiving support from Eat Sleep Live Herefordshire, Green Dragon Hotel, Sunshine Radio and Your Herefordshire.
